Deloitte India has launched the Enterprise Conscious Code (ECC) initiative during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024. This forward-looking effort aims to reduce up to 30% of emissions attributed solely to software, contributing significantly to global carbon footprint reduction. The ECC combines the triple bottom line principles of people, planet, and profits, offering practical ways to develop eco-friendly software and fostering sustainable and responsible software development.

ECC’s Potential Impact on Carbon Emissions

Currently, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector contributes about 3% of global carbon emissions, equivalent to approximately 1.58 billion tonnes annually. Within this sector, the ECC initiative has the potential to slash up to 30% of emissions specifically from software. This reduction not only aligns with global efforts for increased energy consciousness but also leads to significant cost savings, highlighting Deloitte’s commitment to sustainable growth in the technology industry.

Environmental Awareness in Software Solutions

Deloitte emphasizes the often-overlooked emissions from core software, revealing that popular Indian websites alone emit CO2 equivalent to a petrol car covering 10km per user, assuming all pages are viewed. The ECC initiative addresses this issue, promoting environmental consciousness in the technology industry. Deloitte South Asia’s CEO, Romal Shetty, states, “By embracing such conscious practices, we aim to lead the way in creating software solutions that not only meet the highest standards of performance but also contribute to a greener and more inclusive future.”
