Balancing Sustainability and Athlete Satisfaction at the Paris Olympics 2024

The Paris Olympics 2024 has taken significant steps towards sustainability and climate goals, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly practices. One of the key initiatives includes cutting average carbon emissions per meal by half compared to previous Olympics, largely by offering more vegetarian options. To maintain France’s culinary reputation, several Michelin-starred chefs have been enlisted as advisors to Sodexo, the official food contractor. Additionally, the housing complex for athletes, which will be converted into apartments post-Games, employs a renewable underfloor geothermal cooling and heating system, eliminating the need for air conditioning. These efforts align with the broader vision of hosting the greenest Olympics ever.

However, the strong focus on sustainability has led to some discomfort and dissatisfaction among athletes. Many have expressed disappointment with the catering services, particularly the limited meat options on the ‘eco-friendly food menus.’ Athletes like Simone Biles and Marcell Jacobs have commented on the inadequacy of the meals, affecting their recovery post-competition. The absence of air conditioning in the housing complex, despite the hot and humid weather, has also been a challenge, with some athletes struggling to sleep well. These issues highlight the delicate balance between achieving environmental goals and ensuring the comfort and performance needs of the participants.
